For over a century the estate known as Feudo Disisa has belonged to the Di Lorenzo family. Passed down from one generation to the next, the love and respect for the land are today as strong as ever, thanks to the work and passion of a fifth-generation family of winemakers. .
The Di Lorenzo family, originally from Britain, arrived in Sicily under the orders of King Roger of Hauteville. Here, Silvestre Di Lorenzo, viscount of Antona in the Duchy of Nottuberland, settled in the area known as Val di Noto. At the end of 17th century, part of the family moved to Gibellina. Two centuries later, in 1803, Nicola Di Lorenzo was appointed Marquis of Castelluccio by King Ferdinand IV. In 1867, a few years after the Italian unification, the Archpriest Santi Di Lorenzo, another family ancestor with a keen interest in agronomy, bought the estate known as Feudo Disisa and bequeathed it to his nephew Nicolò Di Lorenzo, the former mayor of Gibellina who served as a member of the Italian parliament for two terms from 1904 to 1909.
Nicolò Di Lorenzo married Anna Emanuele di Villabianca, the granddaughter of a distinguished Sicilian historian and scholar. In the 1930s, their son Mario Di Lorenzo, after pursuing a degree in agricultural studies from the university of Portici, decided to devote himself fully to the management and expansion of the family’s holdings. Mario decided to dedicate 150 hectares to viticulture and 70 hectares to olive farming and established here the first cellar for the production of blending wines. The new structure was completed in 1935, and the family celebrated its very first harvest, successfully marketing their wine in northern Italy and France, quickly becoming key players in the agricultural and economic development of their region. This first winery was closed in 1980 and the family began selling grapes to small local producers.
In 1982, the family planted its first experimental vineyard in collaboration with the Regional Institute of Vine and Wine. Two years later, in 1984, new international varietals such as Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah were added. 1987 represents a milestone year for the Di Lorenzo family, now the first registered company to produce Chardonnay in Sicily. In 1998, Feudo Disisa began marketing the olive oil obtained from the November harvest of 1997. 2004 saw the launch of the estate’s brand new cellar, equipped with the most advanced technology: hence, the very first vintage of Feudo Disisa wine made its debut.
Today, the family company is run by Renato Di Lorenzo together with his wife Maria Paola and their children Laura and Mario. As the fifth generation of a family with a passion for viticulture and winemaking, de Di Lorenzo’s have always combined innovation and respect for local traditions and the environment.
