THE OLIVE GROVES

Olives have always been the most important crop of the entire Grisì area. A historical heritage that the Di Lorenzo family has sought to preserve with pride and love for the land’s rich agricultural tradition, working hard to produce olive oil of the highest quality, year after year..

The olive tree is the quintessential element of Sicily’s agricultural landscape. It all begins, after all, with the olive tree, and this is equally true for Feudo Disisa. The tree is the unifying symbol of the entire Mediterranean, its peoples and age-old cultures. They defy the passing of time because they are creatures born to withstand even the harshest growing conditions. The olive tree in Sicily is a heritage of immense value and the unique identity of the island’s native varietals is finally receiving international recognition, thanks to the initiative of growers and companies who, in recent years, have believed in the quality and potential of Sicilian cultivars and the value of promoting biodiversity and the local agricultural heritage.

The main cultivar grown on the Feudo Disisa estate is the Cerasuola, to which over the years other unique Sicilian natives have been gradually added: Nocellara del Belice, Biancolilla, Giarraffa and Ogliarola, all growing on a total planted area measuring just over 100 hectares. Nowadays, olive groves are managed in such a way as to ensure consistent yields year after year, thanks to a rigorous time-schedule for all pruning operations. The master pruners at Feudo Disisa undertake all thinning and elimination cuts with the skill and precision of tailors, with the aid of traditional tools: pruning hooks, scissors and chisels. All work in the olive groves is carried out by a dedicated team, with expert knowledge of every aspect of soil and tree maintenance. Ploughing and fertilization, soil maintenance, monitoring of flowering and fruit formation are all activities undertaken with care and consistency, to obtain perfectly healthy and ripe olives.

The fertilization methods used are the traditional ones, making use of the manure sourced from the cattle farmed on the estate. The most recent plantings are watered using a drip irrigation system to maintain a consistent water supply even in the driest years. Olives are picked exclusively by hand between early October and December. The fruit is harvested and ready to be milled in the space of a few hours in order to preserve all its fragrance and to extract a consistent, traceable and top-quality oil. Feudo Disisa only uses and mills its own olives.
